A day in the life with Ryan, Early Years Apprentice
Working in a nursery means no two days look the same and that’s exactly what Ryan enjoys about his role. As an early year’s apprentice, his days are full, hands-on and centred around supporting children as they learn, play and grow. Ryan is currently studying the Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship, learning new skills as he goes.
Starting the day
Mornings are all about helping children settle in. Ryan spends time greeting them as they arrive and helping them feel comfortable and ready for the day. Some come in full of energy and others take a bit more time, so it’s about reading each child and supporting them in the way they need.
Once everyone is in, the children move into free play. Ryan supports across different areas whether that’s building, role play or reading. This is where he gets to know the children best, joining in, observing and encouraging them as they explore.
Learning through play
As the morning goes on, Ryan helps with group activities like stories, songs or simple games. This might be counting together, talking about the weather or reading a favourite book again and again. These moments help bring the children together while still keeping things fun and engaging.
The rest of the morning is a mix of activities from crafts to outdoor play. Ryan’s role is to support learning in a natural way, asking questions, encouraging curiosity and helping children build confidence.
Snack time
Snack time is part of the routine but also a chance for children to build independence. Ryan supports them with things like washing hands, choosing food and sitting together. It’s a good time to chat and get to know the children even more.
Afternoons in the nursery
Afternoons can look different depending on the children’s energy levels. Some are ready to get stuck back into the activities, while others may need a calmer pace. Ryan adapts to this, supporting both group and individual play.
There are also moments where children need extra support, whether that’s managing emotions or learning how to share. Ryan works alongside the team to guide them through this in a calm and supportive way, teaching the children empathy, kindness and understanding.
Home time
At the end of the day, Ryan updates the parents sharing small moments from the day and anything they might need to know. Building those relationships is an important part of the role and it’s a nice way to reflect on how each child has got on.
Once the children have gone home, the team resets the space and gets ready for the next day.
Ryan’s experience so far
For Ryan, the role is about being involved in those everyday moments that help children develop. He’s learning on the job each day, building skills through real experience and seeing the difference that support and consistency can make. It’s a busy role, but one he finds really rewarding.
The apprenticeship has had it’s challenges, like keeping on top of written work and deadlines, but support from his peers and management has helped him grow in confidence and take responsibility for his learning. He’s proud to be a male in a female-dominated profession and enjoys finding new ways to support children.
Ryan has recently been shortlisted for Advanced Apprentice of the Year the GM Skills Awards, recognising all the hard work he’s done during his apprenticeship. This is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of his enthusiasm and the care he shows everyday with the children he works with.
We will be in Manchester this July for the awards ceremony and can’t wait to celebrate Ryan, and everyone who’s been shortlisted.
