At Acorn Training, social responsibility and engagement are fundamental to our core values. Our Community Champions are committed to supporting staff, participants, and learners to promote overall wellbeing within the community. Based across our five Restart delivery sites, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Burton-on-Trent, Coalville, Melton Mowbray, and Daventry; they provide signposting and support for anyone who needs guidance, resources, or a listening ear.

Community Champions play a vital role in helping participants overcome barriers to employment and education, ensuring learners have access to training opportunities, and promoting positive mental health among staff. They create safe spaces, connect people to local services, and celebrate progress every step of the way.

One of the most practical ways they support the community is through Trussell Trust Food Bank Vouchers. These vouchers can be issued on the same day, allowing individuals to collect food from a local food bank or arrange delivery. Each Champion can only issue vouchers for their specific area, so signposting to the right person is essential. During referrals, Champions ask important questions such as whether the recipient has children, pets, dietary requirements, or allergies, ensuring the food provided meets their needs. Vouchers can be emailed or printed in the office, offering flexibility for those who need it most.

This initiative is a lifeline for participants, learners, and even staff facing unexpected challenges. It reflects our commitment to wellbeing and community care, ensuring that no one feels alone on their journey. At Acorn, we believe that real change begins with real people, and our Community Champions embody that belief every day. Take a look at a case study from one of our champions who supported a participant earlier on this year below:

Case Study Spotlight

Earlier this year, our Community Champions in Leicestershire made a powerful difference in the life of a participant who is on the Restart Scheme juggling  studies, single parenting, and the rising cost of living.

The participant was struggling to keep up with bills and ensure there was enough food on the table. With only one day off, Monday, and local food banks only open on Tuesdays and Fridays, accessing support felt impossible.

That’s when one of our Community Champions stepped in. They took time out of their own day to collect food and essential toiletries for M and their children, ensuring the family had what they needed to get through the week. For the participant, this act of kindness was more than just helpful, it was a lifeline.

Our Community Champions work in partnership with the Trussell Trust food bank. They can issue emergency food vouchers and even help with collections when participants aren’t able to get there themselves. It’s practical, compassionate support that meets people where they are.

Thanks to this support, the participant has continued their studies and recently secured a part-time weekend job, bringing in extra income and taking steps toward long-term stability. Inspired by the help they received, the participant now hopes to give back to their community in the same way they were supported.

This is what Restart is all about: real people, real challenges, and real change, powered by empathy, action, and community.
