Meeting Early Years Requirements for the Sector

For learners pursuing careers in the Early Years sector, achieving Functional Skills is not only beneficial. It’s essential to meet mandatory regulatory qualification standards.

The Department for Education has outlined the qualifications required for staff to be counted within staff: child ratios at Levels 2, 3, and 6 of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Key Highlights:

  • Level 3 Staff: Learners who gain a full and relevant Level 3 qualification (or above) on or after 1 September 2014 must also hold a Level 2 qualification in English. This ensures they are equipped to carry out their roles effectively and meet statutory staffing requirements.
  • Setting Managers (Effective 4 January 2024): Anyone appointed to a managerial position in an Early Years setting on or after 4 January 2024 must hold a Level 2 qualification in Maths.
    If not already held, this qualification must be achieved within two years of starting in the role.
