As a Trainer Assessor, no two days are ever the same. My role is varied, involving a mix of workplace visits, learner support sessions, online teaching, and admin tasks such as marking and managing emails.
Yesterdays day looked a little like this;
Morning Routine
I was up early to take my daughter to school for 8:45am. Once back home, I settled into my home office and started my working day at 9:00am. I use the first 30 minutes of the day to catch up on emails and messages through outlook and our Bud system, making sure I’m up to date before the day gets busy.
During this time, I also prepared for the morning’s online teaching session. I reviewed my presentation on Equality and Diversity and added notes for some interactive activities I planned to include. I made sure I had the attendance register ready too, to keep everything running smoothly.
Teaching Session
From 9:30 to 11:30, I delivered the session. It was a great discussion with learners sharing current knowledge and exploring how equality and diversity can be embedded in early years’ practice. This part of my role is a highlight for me, to be able to share real-world examples and help learners connect theory to their everyday work in settings.
Progress Review Meeting
Immediately after, at 11:30, I moved into a progress review call with one of my learners and their employer. These three-way conversations are crucial for tracking apprenticeship progress, offering additional support if needed, and revisiting timetables, curriculum expectations, and Bud activities. We discussed what was working well and was further support needed. This learner has settled into the nursery setting and working environment well and is making great progress towards her apprenticeship.
Admin Time
By 12:30, I had a small amount of time so, I sent reminder emails to learners and employers I was scheduled to visit the next day, confirming details for upcoming observations. I also used the time to respond to emails that had come in during my teaching session.
Early Years Team Meeting
At 1:00, I joined a standardisation meeting with the Early Years team. We discussed what’s working well, shared best practices, and looked at ways to strengthen consistency. We also took the time to look over our last Ofsted report and looked at the recommendations set during the last inspection.
Learner Records and Qualifications
By 2:00, I was back on Bud, reviewing learners’ online journals, checking which activities were due or needed to be assigned in line with recent teaching sessions. I also completed two qualification claim forms for learners who had completed their training, this involved preparing the paperwork for our IQA team to carry out the necessary final checks.
Marking
By 3:30, I began to focus on marking tasks for the last part of day. I prefer to mark one learner’s work in full at one time. I review each submission, checking spelling, grammar, plagiarism and content while ensuring the criteria has been met. It’s a detailed process, but offering constructive feedback is a vital part of supporting learner progress.
End of Day
My day usually finishes around 5:00pm. While no two days look exactly the same, that’s what I truly love about this role, the variety of what to expect.
